The information on this website is designed to raise awareness and understanding of the Disability Standards for Education 2005 and how they can help you. For more detailed advice and information about specific disabilities, please contact an advocacy or support organisation with specialist knowledge of your situation.


This website is organised into four Topics:

  • Our Rights
  • Reasonable Adjustments
  • What’s Fair?
  • Working Together.

You can access each Topic from a link under the Video Introduction on the home page or via the menu bar at the top of every page. Each Topic has a landing page with a banner, a list of Subtopics, a Video Introduction and a Question.


You can access a Subtopic from the Topic landing page by clicking one of the blue buttons below the banner or from anywhere in the resource via the menu bar at the top.

Meetings Toolkit

The Meetings Toolkit is a Subtopic in ‘Working Together’. It is organised into six sections: Requesting a Meeting; Managing Meetings; Being Prepared; Managing Emotions; Keeping Records; and Was the meeting successful?

You can access each section by clicking on the white button in the blue box at the bottom of the ‘Meetings Toolkit’ page, or at the bottom of each section of the Toolkit.


To watch a video, click the triangular 'play' button at the bottom left of the video frame. You can access all videos via the ‘Stories’ link located at the bottom of every page.


Thought-provoking questions are provided throughout the resource and at the bottom of each Topic landing page. To explore responses to a Question, click on the blue response buttons to the right of the image.


Spotlights in key sections indicate what the Disability Standards for Education mean for different parties. Each party is represented by a photograph. You can read about what the Disability Standards for Education mean for each party by clicking on the ‘I am...’ tab corresponding to the photo.


You can navigate through the entire resource sequentially by clicking on the blue ‘Next’ button near the bottom of each page.  However, you are not required to use this button and can access any section of the resource in any order you like.


A Glossary containing terms and definitions related to education and the Disability Standards for Education can be accessed by clicking on the ‘Glossary’ link at the bottom of every page.


Additional resources and fact sheets can be found by clicking on the ‘Resources’ link at the bottom of every page. Links to these resources are also provided throughout the resource where applicable.


Illustrative Stories are provided throughout the resource. Most people appearing in videos and photographs in this e-learning resource, except those in videos owned by other parties, are actors and may or may not have a disability themselves.

The ‘Stories’ link at the bottom of every page contains all the stories that appear on the website, including videos.

The ‘Site Help’ link at the bottom of each page provides information on how to navigate and use the website, and includes technical specifications and accessibility.


Information about this resource and acknowledgments are provided in the ‘About’ section, accessed via the menu bar at the top of each page.


You can provide feedback on the site through a short questionnaire in the ‘Feedback’ section, accessed via the menu bar at the top of each page.

Technical Specifications

Layout is controlled by Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and has been written according to the CSS 2.1 specifications. The site is still navigable for users who do not use CSS or graphical browsers.

Structured and meaningful Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) has been used to assist users accessing the site via non-visual means, such as users of screen-reading software.

Internet connection

This website is optimised for broadband and 3G/4G wireless connections. Connection speeds may differ depending on the network coverage in your area when you view the site. Please consult your carrier for a list of rates and charges for the use of a 3G/4G connection.

Computers with slower connection speeds may experience difficulties in accessing website content.

  • Embedded videos are accessed via a dedicated Vimeo channel.
  • Computers with slow internet connection may experience slight delays.


  • Sound volume should be set to appropriate volume level.
  • Headphones are optional, to be plugged into headphone jack and volume adjusted.


  • The site functionality aims to meet, as far as practicable, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 for learners with vision or auditory impairments.
  • Closed Captioning is provided for narration audio.
  • Primary navigation is via menus at the top of the page, to provide quick and easy access to the site’s major content areas.
  • Transcripts of videos are provided.
  • A Glossary link is available for specialised terms.
  • Responsive text assists access on some mobile devices.


    If you find that some images are not visible, try refreshing the screen. If this does not work, try clearing the browser history. Browser history can usually be found in the dropdown menus in the toolbar.
